Hello everyone!
Happy New Year! We hope you had a great holiday season and are settling into 2026. With colder weather moving in, we wanted to share a few helpful tips and local highlights for the month.
Don't forget to change your AC filter!
Protect Your Outdoor Plants ❄️
With a freeze expected, it’s a good time to give your plants a little extra care:
Cover delicate plants with frost cloths, sheets, or lightweight blankets overnight.
Bring potted plants inside if possible, especially tropicals or anything in a smaller container.
Water plants well before the freeze — moist soil holds heat better than dry soil.
Decluttering? 📦
January is a great time to clear out closets and storage areas. If you’re decluttering, here are a few local places that accept donations and help support our community:
BEAM (Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry) – Clothing, household items, and pantry goods
City Rescue Mission – Gently used clothing and essential household items
Goodwill – Clothing, shoes, and small household goods at multiple drop-off locations
Donating items you no longer need can make a big difference for someone else and helps keep usable items out of landfills.
Organizational Craft 🧵

As you declutter, set aside small notes, photos, or keepsakes you’re not ready to part with. Place them in a jar or container labeled with the year. It’s a simple way to clear surfaces while keeping meaningful memories organized, and you can look back through everything at the end of the year.
Local Event Highlight 🌟

Colors of the Wild at Jacksonville Zoo (Select Nights Jan-Feb)
Enjoy a lantern-style nighttime event with illuminated wildlife displays. Tickets are $25-$35 for adults and children (2 and under Is free), and it’s a fun way to get out and enjoy a winter evening.
Pet of the Month 🐾
This month’s featured pet is:

Tilly
Hi! I’m Tilly, a mini pig with a big love for sunny naps and even bigger love for snacks. You can find me soaking up the sunshine while I dream about my next meal.
Want your pet to be featured next? Send us a photo of your pet along with their name and a fun fact about them to hannahshometeam@gmail.com.
We’re Here for You

Searing the Beef
If you want to ensure a smooth blend of the cream cheese, try adding the softened cream cheese to a small mixing bowl, then adding a few ladles of the chili from the slow cooker. Whisk until smooth, then stir that mixture into the slow cooker and proceed with adding the half and half and cooking on high for 15 minutes.
Notes

1
Add chicken breasts to bottom of slow cooker, top with salt, pepper, cumin, oregano, chili powder, and cayenne pepper.

2
Top with diced onion, minced garlic, great Northern beans, green chiles, corn, chicken broth and cilantro. Stir.

3
Cover and cook on LOW for 8 hours or on HIGH for 3-4 hours.

4
Remove chicken to large mixing bowl, shred, then return to slow cooker.

5
Add cream cheese and half and half, stir, then cover and cook on HIGH for 15 minutes, or until chili is creamy and slightly thickened.

6
Stir well and serve with desired toppings.
